In my bible reading today (Nehemiah), I came across a section of scripture that referenced “thanksgiving choirs”. In chapter 12, verse 31 it says,
“So I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall, and appointed two large thanksgiving choirs.”
It went on to describe the festivities at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, and where the choirs were placed on the wall. One went toward the right, and one toward the left. There were many, many people on the wall in these choirs. Some brought their instruments. They even had a choir director, Jezrahiah (verse 40).
I guess I have never noticed such an organized choir in the bible before?! In my little mind, I have just pictured a “choir” as something more modern than in biblical times. (duh?!)
What also stuck out to me is the fact that all these people mentioned in verses 31-42 were MEN! Verse 43 says,
“Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and the children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard afar off.”
What a great sound it must have been to hear the voices of many men singing together in unison under the direction of Jezrahiah! I love this sound! It reminded me of a church we used to attend. The pastor would announce the “men’s choir” would be singing. There was no planning, no preparation for this, — no one had any idea that they were coming to church that morning to be in the “men’s choir”…but, their voices rang in unison, so deep, and powerful! What a blessing! It truly was a beautiful sound!
So….I challenge you men of “Blogdom”….share your voices with someone this Sunday. Spread the joy of the Lord so loudly that it will be heard “afar off” as this section of scripture says. Rejoice with great joy! Join the “Thanksgiving” choir –even before November gets here 🙂
